"The Consumer's Forum is a non-governmental, non-political, voluntary organization registered under the societies act and is solely developed to the cause of consumerism The aims of the Consumer's Forum is to promote and protect the rights and interests of consumers. For the purpose of "goods", a consumer means a person belonging to the following categories:(i) One who buys or agrees to buy any goods for a consideration which has been paid or promised or partly paid and partly promised or under any system of deferred payment(ii) It includes any user of such goods other than the person who actually buys goods and such use is made with the approval of the purchaser. For the purpose of "services", a "consumer" means a person belonging to the following categories: (i) One who hires or avails of any service or services for a consideration which has been paid or promised or partly paid and partly promised or under any system of deferred payment (ii) It includes any beneficiary of such service other than the one who actually hires or avails of the service for consideration and such services are availed with the approval of such person. |

Under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, a consumer is guaranteed the following rights:

Lok Adalat:- It has been decided by the Govt. that the functioning of Lok Adalat be started on the last working day of each week for settlement of consumer disputes. The District Forum is also taking steps to organize Lok Adalat for the benefit of consumers. The concept of Lok Adalat is a very convenient option for the consumers to seek redressal of their grievances. Informatively, District Forums entertain complaints involving pecuniary limit of Rs 5,00,000 (to be increased to Rs 20,00,000 with the Consumer Protection Act 2002). The State Commission entertains complaints of pecuniary value more than Rs 5 lakhs and upto Rs 20 lakhs (to be increased to more than Rs 20 lakhs and upto Rs one crore). The National Commission entertains complaints of value of more than Rs 20 lakhs (to be increased to more than Rs one crore). |
